I chose Indy in 1978, because it was the city where my husband Guy could complete his master’s degree in social work at the IUPUI campus.
I’ve lived in Fort Wayne, Evansville, Bloomington, Chicago and Washington, D.C., and I prefer Indy to all those cities. I now reside in Manhattan, Ind. (no kidding). I think somebody should create a site for why the 14 or so of us, not counting cats, dogs, horses and jackasses, who are in Manhattan chose it…but that ain’t gonna happen.
Indy is a great place for all the reasons Pat sited — affordable housing, ease of transportation and community.
It used to be sorta a cowtown, when we first arrived. We lived on the Far Westside near I-465 and 10th Street. We could look out the apartment window and see cornfields. Nobody came downtown except to work and shop. Women wore polyester. Well, so did the men. Not much style.
I liked it from the beginning because you have to be awfully cold not to like a place where you are raising kids and people are kind. The preschools were great. Later on grade schools, including IPS, and Catholic schools, also had plenty to brag on.
My husband made a good living, first as a VA social worker, later as a broker at Morgan Stanley. I had a great time working for The Indianapolis Star.
We have enjoyed watching the city change in most dramatic and exciting ways. I do cry over the crime spree, but that is another story. I also believe Indy has enough serious confrontationists now to really keep the heat on and address that issue.
The best thing about Indy today is that it now affords enough opportunity to attract two of our three children. Our two sons have moved here recently from Chicago.
That says it all.
Thanks for a good forum for a good idea.
