“Indianapolis? Why would we want to move to Indianapolis?”
Embarrassingly enough — those words left my mouth on more than one occasion when speaking with my wife about her hometown. Not very sensitive or open minded – but, I knew very little about the city that I now call home.
After growing up in Chicago and attending Indiana University, I was fortunate enough to have my career take me to Denver, Scottsdale, Newport Beach and back to Chicago. I was very skeptical about moving to Indy. After all, I had lived in some of the best cities in the country and I was sure that Indy wouldn’t compare.
In late 2000, I had an opportunity to move to Indy to start a software company called ExactTarget. One of my co-founders lived in Indy and I was finally able to move my wife closer to her parents and sisters. Six years later, we couldn’t be happier. Indy has turned out to be a great place for our family and a terrific place to start and grow a business. From day one, I received tremendous support from the business community as well as our city and state leaders.
Above is a picture of me with Governor Mitch Daniels and Mayor Bart Peterson at our press conference announcing ExactTarget’s new corporate headquarters and our ongoing commitment to downtown Indianapolis. Both Mayor Peterson and Governor Daniels have been great supporters of ExactTarget. I admire their leadership and am thankful for their commitment to growing jobs and businesses throughout our city and state.
We have been very fortunate at ExactTarget. Our company has grown to over 200 employees and 5,500 clients around the globe. We have emerged as one of the leading on-demand software companies, regardless of industry. Given the nature of our business, we truly could be located anywhere. With great universities, affordable cost of living, a strong workforce and supportive government – we continue to choose Indy!
