Indy Indie Coffee Shops

September 27th, 2007 by Erik Deckers · 11 Comments

As a long-time barfly of independent coffee shops around the Indianapolis area, I’m always on the lookout for new shops to meet friends and clients. Finally, after months of keeping track of everything in a little notebook, I created my own Indy Indie Coffee Shop map, using Google Maps.

And to help spread the love, I’ve posted the map here: Indy Indie Coffee Shops. Use the map to find your own little corner of caffeinated Heaven, and spread the word. If you have a new coffee shop, or one that’s opening soon (I’m talking to you, Corner Coffee. Come back quick!), let me know, and I’ll add it to the map. The same goes if I missed one, or inadvertently put a business on here that doesn’t sell coffee.

Remember, if you want to help the local economy, buy local. For every dollar you spend at a local business, $.40 stays in town. For every dollar you spend at a national chain, only $.13 stays in town. So, support your local independent coffee shops.

    Hi!
Please add Bjava Coffee and Tea at 56 and Lafayette Road.

Check out the coffee house guide coming out in INtake next week! Some of the shops listed on your map may no longer exist.

Erik — Thanks for this great list! I, too, like to patronize the non-starbuckin-or-dunkin spots in town. FYI — Java Junction at Ft. Ben is now an Eagle Creek coffee. And Barnie’s in Castleton mall is a chain, isn’t it? And I think Vic’s downtown isn’t Vic’s anymore (which is too bad), though it may still be a coffee place. One great one you’re missing is the Illinois St. Food Emporium — a cafe that makes great lattes. And there’s a little kiosk place at Oaklandon and Fox Rd. near Geist — Loggerhead, maybe? Their logo is a turtle.

Anyway, thanks for giving me some new spots to try and for bolstering business at some old favorites like Cath. Happy caffeinating!

[...] benefit though is that I’m also supporting a local business owner with their efforts. A post on the I Choose Indy site today shares that a person has put together a Google Map listing Indianapolis’ independent [...]

What a great resource! It would be really cool if on the Google Map, the shops offering free wi-fi were identified with a different push pin color.

  • Erik Deckers // Oct 9th 2007 at 6:42 pm

Thanks for the great idea, Jason. I have done exactly that. All green push pins signify the shops with free wi-fi, and the blue push pins (”IS THAT A PUSH PIN ON YOUR UNIFORM?!?!”) signify the shops that don’t. At least to the best of my knowledge.

That is a great idea! Throw a green tag on The Bean Cup as well, Eric!

This is an excellent idea! As a small biz owner, I spend a lot of time in Coffee Shops and love the idea of supporting the local economy.

I was going to tell you to add Strange Brew and Hula Bean in Greenwood but it looks like they are already on the map. Oh well.
